Laying the framework
The most formative course he’s taken so far, “ENV100: The Environment,” a year-long course, laid the groundwork for the future classes Jaskaran would ultimately take in his degree. He enjoyed that this course covered a variety of topics, such as evolution, climate physics, and weather patterns, while also examining them through a sociological lens. This helped him to understand how interconnected the world and its environmental systems are.
Research opportunities
One of Jaskaran’s favourite opportunities in his undergrad experience thus far has been his Research Opportunities Program (ROP) placement, researching shell morphology in a Jenus Hiatella. He says this experience taught him how to research, a skill that has continued to be more and more important as he pursues Biology. His work was so significant that he also won an award for his research in this area.
Building skills early on
As early as his second year, Jaskaran was able to be a lab assistant for an Intro to Biology course, BIO152. He thought this experience gave him a good foundation in teaching, which is something he will take with him in his future career, and potentially even Medical School. He also enjoyed building relationships with the Teaching Assistants (TAs), to learn more about their perspective and the work they do. The fulfillment from guiding first-year students was another highlight of the experience.
