Our two-step application process starts with students submitting their application through the Ontario Universities’ Application Centre (OUAC), selecting up to three program areas or campuses. After we receive the application, students will gain access to our applicant portal where they can upload documents, complete any required supplementary forms, and track the status of each application independently. The university application process starts in the fall of the year before a student intends to begin their studies. We encourage students to submit their application, well in advance of the deadlines. View all important dates and deadlines.

We encourage applicants to apply by November 7. Applying by our recommended application date ensures that applicants have enough time to complete all of the necessary next steps to be considered in all rounds of admission.

The University of Toronto offers two of its most prestigious scholarships to support exceptional students from around the world. The National Scholarship is awarded to Canadian high school students who demonstrate original thought, leadership in their communities, and academic excellence. For international students, the Lester B. Pearson International Scholarship provides a unique opportunity to study at U of T, celebrating outstanding academic achievement, creativity, and leadership within the school community. Both scholarships are highly competitive and require a nomination.

There are several financial resources and support options for Canadian students to help finance their education, including OSAP and other provincial financial aid programs. We also have the University of Toronto Advanced Planning for Students program (or simply UTAPS), which is the university's largest need-based support program and covers the financial gap between a student's actual education costs and the costs recognized by their provincial/territorial government student financial aid program. As a publicly funded institution, the university is not able to offer direct financial aid to international students. For U.S. students, U of T is a Title IV eligible institution that participates in the William D. Ford Federal Direct Loan student aid program. The university is also an approved institution for the administration of subsidized and unsubsidized U.S. Direct Loans and PLUS Direct Loans.

U of T’s admissions process begins by confirming that applicants meet our general admission requirements, including English language proficiency, based on their educational system. We then assess program-specific requirements, such as prerequisite courses and any required supplemental materials (e.g., personal statements or auditions). Final decisions focus on the most recent two years of academic performance, but we also consider the overall academic record for context and consistency. Review the application assessment process.

Transcripts should be submitted electronically through Parchment, Naviance, OUAC or provincial document system when possible. We cannot accept documents by email.

Applicants should not submit reference letters, resumes or other documents unless requested.

Applicants can find all of their required documents, and instructions on how to submit then, through the Join U of T applicant portal or the Engineering Applicant Portal.

Offers of admission are typically released in rounds from late January until late May. The timing of an admission decision depends on several factors, including target programs and its prerequisites. If an applicant doesn't receive an admission decision in one round, their application will automatically be reviewed again in subsequent rounds.

Applicant's will be updated by email when there is an application update and admission decision will be posted on an applicant's Join U of T Applicant Portal or Engineering Applicant Portal.

When an applicant receives an offer of admission, they will find instructions on accepting the offer on their applicant portal. It is important that they accept the offer before the deadline.

Applicants should log in to the StarRez portal to confirm their interest in residence before March 31 to be eligible for our first-year residence guarantee.

Students who are not Canadian citizens or permanent residents must apply for a study permit to study in Canada. The offer of admission includes a required letter for the study permit application. Students will also need a Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL) as part of the study permit application, which we will issue after they accept their offer and pay the admission deposit.

University Health Insurance Plan (or UHIP) is a mandatory health insurance plan for international students. It helps to cover the cost of healthcare services delivered and billed in Canada. Enrolment in UHIP is automatic, with coverage charged directly to each student's account balance. Learn more about UHIP.

International students need to make an admission deposit as part of accepting their offer of admission. Details about the deposit are available in their offer letter.

The first fees instalment is normally due at the end of August or start of September. Each student will receive details during the summer, tailored to their program and, if applicable, courseload. Students can see their account balance and find instructions on making a payment through their ACORN account.

Students who will be living in residence typically move in around the first week of September. Incoming students should monitor their email regularly for logistical guidance and other updates from their Dean of Residence. Details about orientation week will be sent to students over the summer.

The academic year begins in September and consists of a fall semester (September – December) and a winter semester (January – April). Throughout the year there are statutory holidays, one study break per semester and a two-week campus closure during the winter holiday season. Classes and final exams for fall-winter and winter courses conclude by late April.
