Strong foundations
One of Gurpreet’s favourite courses so far has been BIO310: Physiology of Regulatory Systems, which explores how the human body—and different systems within it—work. She says the course deepened her interest in Biology and gave her strong research skills, which she would later use in her upper-year courses.
Mental well-being
A crucial part of the Health field, Gurpreet is passionate about mental health, and sought to learn more about it by volunteering at UTM’s Health and Counselling Centre. She also worked as a peer mentor for U of T Student Life’s Health & Wellness division, guiding students on managing their mental wellbeing and academics through healthy exercise, sleep and eating choices. Working with students for 5-6 sessions per semester, Gurpreet felt fulfilled being a first point of reference for students, and directing them to the proper resources if they needed more help.
Gaining work experience
In addition to hands-on labs and lectures, Gurpreet has gained valuable work experience as a Recruitment and Admissions Officer, Campus Tour Guide and Health and Counselling Student Advisory member. These experiences have strengthened her communication, presentation, time management, teamwork, and event organizing skills.

"Open communication is key—speak to your peers, go to your professor’s office hours, you never know what opportunities it might lead to!"
