Applying How to Apply

Two-step application process

Applying to U of T is straightforward and starts with two steps:

  • Step 1 Submit your application through the OUAC

All applications to U of T start with the Ontario Universities' Application Centre (OUAC). You will need to:

    1. Choose the appropriate application for you.
    2. Select the program area(s) that you're applying to.
    3. Complete and submit the OUAC application.

The initial application is simple. It only asks for basic biographical details and your program choice(s). There are no transcripts or other supplemental application requirements to submit at this point!

    Review application deadlines

  • Step 2 Complete next steps on our applicant portals

About a week after we receive your application from the OUAC, you'll receive an email from us with instructions on how to log into the Join U of T applicant portal, or the Engineering Applicant Portal. In the portals, you will:

    1. Upload required documents (if applicable).
    2. Complete any supplemental forms or profiles required by your program.
    3. Track the status of your application

The portals are also the place where you will apply for residence, financial aid, and more.

Apply to one, two or three program areas

We offer flexibility when it comes to your program choices. You can apply to up to three different programs or campuses in one application cycle, but only one application per program area (for example, only one application to the Faculty of Arts & Science at the St. George campus).

Your applications will be considered independently from each other. That means you can receive multiple offers of admission and that your decisions may come at different times in the application cycle.

Scenario #1

You could apply once to the Faculty of Music, the Faculty of Kinesiology & Physical Education, and the Faculty of Arts & Science.

Scenario #2

You cannot apply to two program areas within the Faculty of Arts & Science.

Scenario #3

You could apply once to U of T Mississauga, U of T Scarborough, and the Faculty of Applied Science & Engineering (St. George campus).

Scenario #4

You cannot apply to two program areas at U of T Mississauga.

More information about the application process

Admission categories

For many of our programs, you may apply to an admission category instead of the specific program. This allows students in their first year to explore their academic options before choosing a specialist, major or minor at the end of their first year. For example, if you plan to study Biology in the Faculty of Arts & Science, you would apply to Life Science. Or if you plan to study English at U of T Mississauga, you would apply to Humanities. All of the programs within your target area will still be available to you, but now you have time to discover all of our 700+ program areas. Our program listings indicate which admission category each program is part of.

Supplemental applications

Most of our programs only require your academic results for admission. However, some programs require you to complete a supplemental application. These applications help to get a fuller picture of your interests and experiences, so we can learn more about you beyond your grades.

Communicating with you

We will primarily communicate with you by email, using the address you provided in your application. Please make sure it's active and that you check it regularly. We recommend using a personal email account that you'll continue to have access to after you leave your current institution, as some school-provided accounts may become inactive. We may also send mail to the mailing address in your application.

University policy on access to student records and personal privacy means we can only communicate with the applicant unless we have written permission to speak with someone else about the application.

Admissions timeline

Applying to the university involves several key steps and deadlines. Whether you're an applicant living in Ontario or somewhere else in the world, these timelines will guide you through the application and admissions process.
