Transferring to U of T

Find general admission requirements if you are currently a university or college student, or have completed post-secondary studies. Additionally, check our program listings for any specific requirements for your intended area of study. If your first language is not English, you may need to provide proof of English proficiency.

Programs with limited transfer options

Most program areas welcome transfer students, but a few areas aren't able to accommodate transfer applicants due to high demand or structured curriculum requirements. You won't be able to apply as a transfer student to the following programs:

Faculty of Arts & ScienceU of T MississaugaU of T Scarborough
Computer ScienceComputer Science, Mathematics, and StatisticsComputer Science
Rotman Commerce Double Degree
  Mathematics
  Statistics
  Paramedicine
(only open to students who have completed an Ontario college Paramedic program)
All Health Sciences Stream programs (TXD, TXH, TXF)

If you are considering changing faculties or campuses—for example, transferring from the Faculty of Arts & Science to U of T Mississauga—or if you've previously studied at the university in a degree program, pre-university program, or as a non-degree or visiting student (excluding Continuing Education studies), you will need to apply using the University of Toronto Internal Application.

Note: You do not need to apply for an internal transfer if you're changing programs within your current faculty (e.g. changing your program of study from Biology to Chemistry within U of T Scarborough). Contact your registrar's office.

Admission consideration is based on your overall academic record. All program prerequisites must be met at either the senior high school or university level. Applicants to limited enrolment programs must present the required first-year university courses. Admission to a specific program is determined by the faculty/department once transfer credits have been assessed, and will depend on whether or not program prerequisites, grade requirements and any other admission requirements have been met.

Transfer credits are assessed after admission has been decided.

If you're looking to take courses to upgrade your scores to qualify for a graduate program or other professional programs, you may want to consider applying as a non-degree applicant.

If you're interested in pursuing a second undergraduate degree, you must apply to a different program of study at the university than the one in which you completed your first degree. A maximum of 5.0 transfer credits may be granted towards a second degree. We advise prospective students to consider whether a second degree is actually required for their purposes. For example, a ‘make-up’ year as a non-degree student may satisfy admission requirements for a graduate or professional program in lieu of a second degree.

Note that some program areas do not consider applications from students who have previously attended other post-secondary institutions. If you have completed an engineering degree at another institution, you are not eligible to apply for degree-level undergraduate studies in Engineering at the university. Be sure the program in which you are interested will consider your application.
