University & College Transfer Credits

If you took courses in one of the following U of T divisions and transfer to another division listed below, you may be eligible for retained credit for these courses. If eligible, you are not required to complete a transfer credit application:

• Faculty of Arts & Science
• John H. Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape, and Design
• U of T Mississauga
• U of T Scarborough

If you are applying from another recognized university—or from a U of T division other than the ones listed above—you may qualify for transfer credit, provided the content of your courses is considered appropriate for your intended degree program. For most U of T programs, students who have completed up to two years of study can be granted a maximum of 10 full-course transfer credits. You can check which of your courses might transfer to U of T through the Transfer Explorer.

You will be notified of any transfer credits to which you are entitled soon after we receive your completed transfer credit application. You do not have the option of forfeiting transfer credit for post-secondary studies.

Some programs do not consider applications from students who have previously attended post-secondary institutions. Be sure the program in which you are interested will consider your application.

If you have completed more than two years at a recognized university, you may not be permitted to transfer into the same field of study at the University of Toronto. If you are close to finishing a three- or four-year degree, we encourage you to complete the degree at your home university or apply as a Visiting Student with your home university's permission. 

If you're interested in pursuing a second undergraduate degree, you must apply to a different program of study at the university than the one in which you completed your first degree. Review our second degree policy for more details.

Program admission is determined by the faculty or department once the transfer credit assessment is complete, and will depend on whether or not you’ve met the program prerequisites and grade requirements.

If you have completed a three-year diploma or a four-year Applied Degree at an Ontario College of Applied Arts and Technology or Institute of Technology and Advanced Learning, you may be eligible for a maximum of 5.0 transfer credits, depending on the division. Up to three “generic” credits may be granted towards an Arts, Science, Commerce/Management degree to candidates who have completed a two year diploma program.

If you are admitted from the CEGEP system, you may be eligible to receive transfer credits. The maximum number of transfer credits you are eligible for is based on how many CEGEP academic courses you completed.

Transfer credit is assessed after admission. If you have completed post-secondary studies that might qualify for credit, your offer of admission will include instructions on completing an online transfer credit assessment application.

If you would like to apply to a second undergraduate university degree, you must apply to a different program of study at the University of Toronto than the one in which you completed your first degree. A maximum of 5.0 transfer credits may be granted towards a second degree.

Note that if you have completed an Engineering degree at another institution, you are not eligible to apply for degree-level undergraduate studies in Engineering at the University of Toronto. Also, some programs do not consider applications from students who have previously attended other post-secondary institutions. Be sure the program in which you are interested will consider your application.

We advise prospective students to consider whether a second degree is actually required for their purposes. For example, a ‘make-up’ year as a Non-degree student may satisfy admission requirements for a graduate or professional program in lieu of a second degree. Applicants should notify University Admissions & Outreach immediately, in writing, if they wish to amend a current degree program application to apply for Non-degree studies.

Note, however, that certain courses, such as Commerce and Management courses at the Faculty of Arts and Science, University of Toronto (St. George), the University of Toronto Mississauga, and the University of Toronto Scarborough are not open to Non-Degree students.
