No two students are alike, and your degree doesn't have to be either. At U of T, you can choose from over 700+ program options to build a degree as unique as you are.
Choose your path
For most areas, you'll need to complete at least 20 credits to earn a U of T degree. You'll focus on one or more academic areas, while also taking elective courses that let you explore new ideas and interests.
Most students take five credits per year. Semester-long courses are usually 0.5 credits, and full-year courses are usually 1.0 credit. Depending on your program and academic goals, you may choose to take more or fewer credits each year.
Within arts, business and science programs, you'll build your degree around one or more program types—specialists, majors and minors. Each type requires a different number of credits to complete:
A specialist is the deepest and most extensive study of a subject, with 10 to 18 credits.
A major offers a comprehensive study of a subject, with 6 to 9 credits.
A minor provides foundational knowledge, with 4 to 5 credits.
Most students don't need to choose their program of study or type until after first year. This gives you time to explore your options before deciding how you want to shape your degree.
I love that the Faculty of Arts & Science let's you be flexible with what you want to study and truly explore your horizons. I didn't know what linguistics was until the end of my first year and when I took the course, I knew that was what I wanted to pursue!
To graduate, you'll need to complete at least one of the following combinations of program types:
One specialist
Two majors
One major and two minors
These combinations give you the flexibility to go deep in one area or explore a range of interests. For example, you could pair a major in Biology with minors in French and Urban Studies, or pursue a specialist in Computer Science to focus your studies in one field.
