Alumni Profile Andrew

From higher education student to higher ed associate
Class of 2019

Finding a home-away-from-home on campus

Hailing from Corner Brook, Newfoundland, Andrew was drawn to U of T because of it's strong global reputation and applied to the Scarborough campus because of the smaller feel and tight sense of community. He appreciated the diversity of the student body at UTSC and enjoyed meeting other out-of-province and international students in various classes and clubs on campus.

From extra curriculars to career

As an upperclassman, Andrew was involved in a few clubs that would spark his passion for leadership, specifically within higher education. One of which was the Students of Sociology Association, where he held the role of President. In this position, Andrew developed critical leadership, budgeting and community-building skills. He also learned how to liaise with students and staff to ensure priorities were aligned.

Another formative experience was his work in the Office of Student Wellbeing and Engagement, where he worked in the Leadership and Development portfolio. In this position, he led workshops to help students find their strengths and co-facilitated and led a campus-wide conference. He says both these experinces sparked his passion for working in higher education and helped him hone the skills he would use in his post-grad career.

Where a U of T degree will take you...

After graduating with his Bachelor of Arts in 2019, Andrew then earned his Master's degree in Higher Education at the Ontario Institute of Secondary Education in 2021, where he concentrated in community-building for first year students. He then went on to work for ACTS, a programming initiative for underrepresented populations at U of T and higher education in general, encouraging students to come to post-secondary. Currently he works at U of T in post-secondary access.
