International students planning to study in Canada generally require a valid study permit. A study permit is a document issued by the Canadian government that allows you to be in Canada and to study. It may also allow you to work on and/or off campus as long as you meet the requirements.

Step 1 Accept your offer of admission
Follow the instructions on the Join U of T applicant portal to accept your offer of admission. The portal will update your decision within a few days.
If you're joining the Faculty of Applied Science Engineering, follow the instructions on the Engineering Applicant Portal.
Step 2 Pay your admission deposit
Pay your admission deposit through ACORN, our student information system. You can make your payment using a MasterCard or VISA credit card. Your Offer Letter includes additional details about the admission deposit.
Step 3 Receive your Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL)
We'll issue you a PAL after you pay your admission deposit and accept your offer.
The Canadian federal government requires most international students to include a Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL) with their study permit application. If you need a PAL, make sure you have it before applying for your study permit. To avoid delays, use the same mailing address on your study permit application as the one on your PAL.
PALs are typically issued about a week after you pay your admission deposit. We'll let you know by email when your PAL is available, along with next steps in the study permit process.
Step 4 Apply for your study permit
After you receive your PAL, apply for your study permit as soon as possible—it can take many weeks to process.
