Sponsored Students

Eligibility

You may be considered a sponsored student if 50% or more of your tuition fees will be paid directly to the University of Toronto by an external (non-U of T) agency or organization.

To qualify as a sponsored student, you must meet all the following requirements:

  • Be sponsored by an eligible sponsor
  • Have no prior university fees outstanding
  • Enrolled in courses for the semester(s) to which you are requesting sponsorship
  • Submit your tuition fee deferral request prior to your faculty or campus' payment due deadline

Timeline for sponsored students

Sponsored students have a few additional items to be aware of during the U of T application process.

Before your last year of high school Think about what you want to study

Explore our broad range of program options by visiting our Undergraduate Programs page. Browse our programs by areas of interest to find the U of T program that’s right for you.

Remember to review your sponsorship terms and conditions to confirm the programs you’re eligible for.

Sep - Oct Review admission requirements

Check the eligibility criteria for the U of T programs you are interested in. Besides meeting our general admission requirements, you may need to provide specific prerequisite courses. Some program areas also require supplemental information, like personal profiles or statements of interest.

Sep - Oct Learn about fees

Familiarize yourself with the fees associated with attending U of T, like tuition, ancillary fees, residence, meal plans and other program fees.

Sep - Jan Submit your application

Once you have reviewed admission requirements for the program(s) you are interested in, submit your application on the OUAC website. Be sure to review the OUAC website for application instructions and important deadlines.

We encourage sponsored students to apply before the November 7 recommended early application date.

Nov - Jan Enable your JOINid

We will send you an acknowledgement email a few days after we receive your application. This email will include your JOINid and instructions on accessing the Join U of T applicant portal or the Engineering Applicant Portal.

Nov - Jan Inform us of your sponsorship status

You can identify your sponsored student status and and indicate your sponsoring organization on Join U of T.

If your third-party sponsorship organization is not listed on Join U of T, email the Third-Party Sponsorships team at student.sponsorships@utoronto.ca to inform us that you are a sponsored student. Include your sponsorship organization's name and your sponsor’s contact information.

We will reach out to you throughout the application process with additional instructions and next steps.

Nov - May Track your application

After you have enabled your JOINid, you will have access to the Join U of T applicant portal—and the Engineering Applicant Portal, if you applied to Engineering. You will be able to track the status of your applications through these sites.

Nov - Feb Complete next steps

Depending on your academic background and the program you are applying to, you may need to complete some next steps—like submitting transcripts, English language tests, or supplemental applications. Find all the next steps on Join U of T or the Engineering Applicant Portal.

Jan - Mar Apply for residence

Living in residence is a great way to start your university experience. If you are looking to live on campus, the deadline to apply for residence is March 31.

Sponsored students may want to take advantage of the first year residence guarantee and live in residence in their first year.

Jan - May Wait for an admission decision

Admission decisions are released in rounds between January and May. If you applied to more than one area, you may not receive all the decisions at the same time. When you receive an offer depends on several things—like the program you applied to, when your prerequisite grades are available, or how competitive the program is.

Jan - May Accept your offer of admission

Congratulations! You can review and accept your offer on the Join U of T applicant portal or the Engineering Applicant Portal. Be sure to accept your offer before the deadline stated in your offer letter.

Please read the terms and conditions of your U of T offer carefully, as your sponsorship status may impact your ability to receive any additional awards from U of T.

Feb - May Pay your admission deposit

You may need to pay an admission deposit to secure your place at U of T. You will pay your admission deposit through ACORN, our student information system. Review your offer letter for more information on paying your admission deposit.

Depending on your sponsorship organization and the terms and conditions of your sponsorship, your sponsor may pay or waive your admission deposit on your behalf. We will provide more information about your admission deposit and how it will be processed.

Feb - May Apply for your study permit

International students planning to study in Canada generally require a valid study permit issued by the Canadian government. As part of the study permit application, you may also be required to submit a Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL), which you will receive from the university after you accept your offer of admission and pay the admission deposit.

You can apply for a study permit after accepting your offer, paying your admission deposit, and obtaining the necessary documents for your study permit application.

Please note that the majority of admission offers are conditional upon achieving acceptable final standing. U of T does not issue final offers of admission.

We highly recommend connecting with one of our International Student Immigration Advisors (ISIAs) on our three campuses to learn more about the study permit application process and requirements.

May - August Satisfy your offer conditions

Most admission decisions are based on interim marks, and the majority of our offers are conditional on achieving acceptable final standing. You are expected to maintain consistent academic performance during your high school (and post-secondary, if applicable) studies. You must also satisfy any other conditions specified on your offer of admission, such as English language tests, if applicable.

Jun - Jul Transfer credits

You may be eligible for transfer credit if you have taken any Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate, French Baccalaureate, GCE, or CAPE courses during high school. Transfer credits are assessed after admission.

Jul Enrol in classes

Course enrolment happens in the summer and works differently depending on your faculty or campus. Your faculty or campus will send you more information about registering for classes.

Jun - Jul Submit your third-party sponsorship deferral request and Sponsored Student Information Form

You will need to submit a completed Sponsored Student Information Form and the required documents needed to arrange a third-party sponsorship deferral request so that U of T can bill your sponsorship organization directly. Email the required documents to Student Accounts at studentar@utoronto.ca, and cc the Third-Party Sponsorship team at student.sponsorships@utoronto.ca

Ensure your sponsorship documents have been received and that your deferral request has been processed by monitoring your ACORN account. Your status should change from “Invited to Register” to “Registered” once your deferral is processed successfully.

You are responsible to pay in full any outstanding balances on your tuition and ancillary fees not covered by the sponsorship organization before the deadline set by your faculty or campus. If you are staying in residence, you will also need to pay the deposit as stated in your residence offer email.

Sep Begin your journey with us!

Welcome to the U of T community! We are excited to be part of your academic journey and look forward to welcoming you on-campus in September.

Oct - Jan Pay your fees

Your sponsor will be invoiced for your eligible fall and/or winter fees.

Please note that any fees not covered by your sponsor are your responsibility to pay before the end of your academic session.

Mar - Apr Make sure your fees are paid

Ensure your sponsor’s payment has been received and is reflected in your balance owing on ACORN. Make any remaining payments for fees that are not covered by your sponsor before the deferral due date of April 30. Note that payments can take 5-10 business days to reflect on your account, so leave enough time for processing.
