Student Profile Maryem

Hands-on experience, practical skills

Hands-on learning

As a member of the Faculty of Kinesiology & Physical Education, Maryem has access to classes and experiential learning opportunities that fuel her passion for the discipline. For example, in KPE355 and KPE455, two full-year, internship experiences eligible for course credit, she was able to get hands-on experience in the clinical setting. Last year, she worked for Parachute Canada, a national organization working to prevent injuries, as an Assistant to the Director of the Ontario Fall Prevention Collaborative. Her work was research based, as she interviewed healthcare practitioners and providers who were giving classes on preventing falls in older people, and investigated issues of accessibility in local facilities and transit. She then created an analysis report from her findings, which was ultimately sent to the ministry to be used to improve physical activity classes in the province.

Inspiring faculty

One of Maryem’s favourite parts about her faculty is the people. Constantly being surrounded by renowned professors and inspiring peers has encouraged her to work hard and chase her ambitions. In her "ANA400 - Anatomy Dissection" course, students teach parts of the class, researching various topics and relaying it to their fellow students during the lecture. She says teaching the material, in addition to just learning it, helped her understand it even more. She also found meaning and gratitude in connecting with the families of the Willed Body Program donors at the annual memorial service. Both loved ones and students were appreciative of the chance to fulfill the donors' final wish of contributing their bodies to science and education.

Extra curricular involvement

Outside of the classroom, Maryem likes to workout, play tennis and participate in clubs like KPE Roadmap to Wellness Club, which she's currently the president of. This student-run mental health organization works to make mental health resources more accessible to students in the faculty, through low-cost events like tote bag painting, bake sales, frisbee, zumba classes and distress nights. Maryem likes that the environment is welcoming and collaborative.
