Build Your Own Degree

As a U of T student, you’ll have the opportunity, flexibility, and choice in our academic programs and experiences that cannot be found at any other university in North America. Undergraduate students can choose from more than 700 academic programs to build a degree that is personalized to their interests.

When building an Arts, Science, or Business degree, you’ll have the opportunity to choose from Specialist, Major, and Minor program options. Engineering students can add on a certificate, a specific Engineering minor, like business or nano technology, or an Arts & Science minor. For our students in Music, Kinesiology or Architectural/Visual Studies, they can also combine their studies with programs within the Faculty of Arts & Science

3 circles: a full circle for Specialist, a half circle for Major, a quarter circle for Minor

Specialist: This program type is the greatest concentration on one subject area. More than half of the credits taken (9-16) will be in this academic area.

Major: A major consists of around one third (6-9) of the total credits.

Minor: This is the smallest program type at just 4 credits.

Programs of study can be combined provided that students meet the program requirements. In order to graduate, students must present a minimum of one of the following combinations of programs:

  • One specialist
  • Two majors
  • One major and two minors

In an undergraduate degree, students will take a minimum of 20 credits in a variety of subjects.  Programs allow students to concentrate on one or more academic areas while also taking elective courses. Students can be very creative with their program combinations to build a uniquely personalized degree.
