Here’s an overview of the steps you’ll need to take to apply to the University of Toronto.

Submitting Your Application

  • Browse program offerings at the University of Toronto, decide which admissions category you want to apply to, and confirm that you meet the admission requirements, English language requirements and are prepared to submit a supplemental application, if required for the program
  • All applications for studies beginning in Fall 2025 will open in September 2024
  • Submit your application by our recommended early application date of November 7th. The final application deadline is January 15th

Next Steps (Submitting Documents)

  • Receive our application acknowledgement email about one week after you submit your application. It will include your JOINid
  • Enable your JOINid, then access the Join U of T Portal or the Engineering Applicant Portal
  • Find the list of required documents, forms, or supplemental applications on Join U of T or the Engineering Applicant Portal
  • Submit required documents and proof of English Language Facility (if required) by February 1. Some things may be required earlier so check the application portals for all deadlines. We strongly encourage you to complete all of the next steps well ahead of the deadlines
  • Submit your resident application by March 31st, even if you haven’t received an admission decision yet. Find more information about applying for residence at uoft.me/residence-app
  • Track the status of your application on Join U of T and the Engineering Applicant Portal
  • Watch your email inbox for details about additional next steps, application updates, and invitations to events and other ways to connect

Get an Admission Decision & Plan Your Start

  • Most admission decisions will be released in rounds between January and May. We will email you when a decision is available, but keep checking Join U of T and Engineering Applicant Portal for updates
  • Be sure to accept your offer of admission before the deadline posted on your offer letter

Submitting Your Application

Choose your Program of Study and Check for the Requirements

The University of Toronto offers a wide variety of undergraduate, professional and graduate programs. Browse our viewbooks. Use the Program Finder to discover undergraduate programs at the University of Toronto, and find program-specific requirements, including supplementary applications if required.

If you are interested in applying to the Medical Radiation Sciences, Nursing, or Physician Assistant programs, visit Professional and Graduate Programs to find your admission requirements.

Do you meet the admission requirements?

Look up the University’s undergraduate admission requirements based on your educational background.  In addition to meeting general university admission requirements, you may need to present specific subject prerequisites, or submit a personal profile or statement of interest.

Do you meet the English language requirements?

If English is not your first language, you may need to provide evidence of adequate English proficiency.  Find out about the University’s English language requirements.

Consult the University of Toronto’s Important Application Dates

The application process begins in the fall, with most application deadlines in January. Be sure to apply early. Spaces fill quickly and programs may close before the published deadlines.

The early application deadline is November 7th.

Start looking into scholarships right away, as many have early deadlines. Check to see which scholarships you may be eligible for.

Log in to Join U of T

Approximately one week after submitting your application online, you will receive an email with instructions on accessing join.utoronto.ca. Check this site regularly for updates on the status of your application, any additional information you may need to provide, and notification of offers.  If you have trouble accessing your account after you enable it, please note that most login problems can be solved by resetting your password.

Submit required documentation

You must submit full documentation for all studies. Find out detailed information about the required documents and document deadlines.

Be sure to check your status at Join U of T regularly, and follow instructions on submitting supporting documentation, if applicable.

Keep working hard while awaiting an answer

Conditional offers of admission to Ontario secondary school students are typically made between late February and late May. For other applicants, decisions are made on an on-going basis. If you are currently studying, you’ll need to keep your grades up, as offers based on interim grades are conditional. Once we receive your final official results that meet the condition(s) on your offer, you will be notified that the condition has been met.

Want to live in Residence? Fill out the StarRez Application

If you’re thinking of living on campus, you must complete the University’s common residence application, StarRez. Residence is guaranteed for all new full-time students entering their first year of university in an undergraduate program for the first time – as long as you’ve completed the StarRez application by March 31st and received and accepted an offer of admission by June 1st.

Consider your financial options

Get a handle on your finances by considering the costs, such as tuition fees, textbooks and living expenses, and exploring some of the many sources of funding that may be available to you. Be sure to look into government and University of Toronto programs, scholarships, and grants.

Received an offer of admission? Congratulations!

Accept the offer and look ahead to your university life

Be sure to login to JOIN U of T to accept your offer of admission.

If you haven’t already done so, you’ll want to begin planning for your university experience, including course selection and registration,  and considering housing arrangements, transportation and dining options.  You can also sign up for an orientation event, and take note of some important dates for newly admitted students.

Want to take a gap year? Request a deferral

If you are unable to begin your degree studies this fall, you may request a one-year deferral of your offer of admission. Deferrals are not guaranteed and will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. Deferral requests that are approved will include deferral of eligible entrance scholarship(s) awarded – check the terms of your award for conditions & eligibility – and the residence guarantee, if applicable. Deferral applications will be available to students who have met all offer conditions, starting in July. Please note that offers to non-degree studies and the International Foundations Program at the Faculty of Arts and Science, St. George campus are not eligible for deferral.
