Waitlist

We are unable to admit all students who have good academic records, so our waitlist is an opportunity for eligible undergraduate applicants to be reconsidered for admission. Applicants on the waitlist will be assessed for admission for any available spaces in the program that they originally applied to, as well as related program areas at the university.

Not all applicants are eligible to join the waitlist. Applicants are invited to the waitlist based on their academic record and anticipated program space. Once invited to join the waitlist, an applicant must confirm their interest and accept the invitation.

If you are an applicant to the Faculty of Applied Science & Engineering, please note that the information here does not apply. Please continue to monitor your Engineering Applicant Portal for updates regarding your application status. If you have any questions please email engineering@utoronto.ca for further assistance.

Frequently Asked Questions About the Waitlist

We are unable to admit all students who have good academic records, so our waitlist is an opportunity for eligible undergraduate applicants to be reconsidered for admission. Applicants on the waitlist will be assessed for admission for any available spaces in the program that they originally applied to.

Eligible applicants are invited to join the waitlist for a specific program area. You will receive a notification on the Join U of T applicant portal about an offer to join the waitlist. If you are offered a spot on the waitlist, you will need to confirm your interest by completing the Waitlist Confirmation Form. You must submit the Waitlist Confirmation Form within two weeks of being invited to the waitlist. If you do not submit the Waitlist Confirmation Form, your application will not be considered again for admission.

To access the Waitlist Confirmation Form, log in to the Join U of T applicant portal, click on the Check Your Application Status button, and then click on the Waitlisted status link associated with your application.

The Waitlist Confirmation Form is only available to applicants who have been invited to join the waitlist.

Not all applicants are invited to join the waitlist for a program area. Students on the Waitlist have good academic records but fall just below the current threshold for admission to a particular program area.

Not all faculties and program areas offer a waitlist. Waitlists are utilized when there are many highly qualified applicants beyond the spaces available in the program area. Faculty and program areas that offer a waitlist can change from year to year.

If you’ve been invited to join the waitlist for a program area, you will see a “Waitlisted” status update on your application in the Check Your Application Status section of the Join U of T applicant website. Click on the application to find more details and to access the Waitlist Confirmation Form.

Your first step is to complete the Waitlist Confirmation Form on the Join U of T applicant portal. To access the form, log in to the Join U of T applicant portal, click on the Check Your Application Status button, and then click on the Waitlisted status link associated with your application. You must complete the Waitlist Confirmation Form within two weeks of being invited to the waitlist.

Your application, along with updated academic results, will be considered for any remaining spaces in the program you have applied to. You will be notified about an admission decision by email and through the Join U of T applicant portal.

If you are from outside of Ontario and an international student, you will receive an admission decision on your waitlisted application by May 24.* All other students will receive an admission decision to their waitlisted application by July 26.

*International applicants will receive early responses to their waitlisted applications so that they have enough time to apply for a study permit.

We can’t guarantee that we’ll be able to offer you admission from the waitlist. If you have another offer of admission to U of T, or another university, we encourage you to accept the best offer you have before the deadline. You will be able to change your accepted program if you do receive an offer of admission to a program area that you are on the waitlist for.

That’s difficult to say. Receiving an offer of admission from on the waitlist depends on the program area you have applied to, the number of available spaces in the program area, and your academic record. Our waitlist is not ranked and students on it are assessed on academic merit. But rest assured that we will thoroughly review your application again and consider you for open program areas.

No. All applications are assessed independently from each other. An admission decision for one does not have an impact on any other applications you may have.

It is important to join the waitlist even if you completed the Alternate Admission Category Request Form. Joining the waitlist ensures that you will be considered where space is available.

Note: Not all applicants have access to the Alternate Admission Category Request Form.

Not necessarily. For some applicants, we’re not able to admit them to the area that they applied to now, so they are given an option to join the waitlist for that program area. However, based on the applicant’s academic record, we think that they may also be a good fit for a different program area—so we may make an alternative offer of admission for the applicant to consider. The applicant can still join the waitlist for the initial admission decision and will be considered as usual. Receiving or accepting an alternative offer does not affect the original application or the waitlisted decision.

If you choose not to join the waitlist—or you do not submit the Waitlist Confirmation Form by the deadline—that application will not be further considered for admission. Any other open applications or admission decisions you may have will not be affected.
